Winter is a quiet time in Villa Grande and the Preserve, especially with fewer visitors to the beach. But activity in the Preserve is in full swing during the restoration season, a time when we can go into the Preserve to prune and plant without worrying about disturbing ground-birds or their nests.

Update from the Restoration Team:
We continue to remove invasive plants like ivy, periwinkle, and Himalayan blackberry. We also are removing small bays to allow for sunlight to reach the forest floor, encouraging the understory to grow and provide more habitat for birds. We had to do a lot of storm clean up, including getting rid of trash and clearing the trees and branches that fell during the storms. You will see these in piles at the entrance to the Preserve. They will be getting chipped at the end of February. Our Restoration Committee is planning for the next season and think about the projects that need to be completed. If you have any interest in joining the committee, email Kaya at pattersonpointpreserve@gmail.com.
Here’s what’s happening during the next few weeks:
Weeding Work Days (rain permitting):
Saturday, January 25: 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1: 9 to 11 a.m.

STRAW and Monte Rio Elementary School:
Thanks to a grant from the Sonoma County Water Agency, the Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed (STRAW) will be partnering with our local Monte Rio Elementary School to plant basket sedge, ginger and sorrel in the Preserve. If you have any of these native plants in your garden that you’re willing to donate, please send a note to Kaya, our restoration manager at pattersonpointpreserve@gmail.com. If you’d like to see the kids and STRAW planting, stop by around 10 a.m. on Tuesday or Wednesday, February 11 or 12.

Put in Your Calendar and Save these Dates:
March 8th (Saturday) We’ll be hosting the end of this year’s restoration season with a “Clip and Sip” day. Together we’ll trim the historic rose bush, clip bay and redwood suckers, and then finish with a sip of wine from local wineries. Stay tuned for more details. April 26 (Saturday). 10 a.m. - Noon. We will celebrate Earth Day by cleaning Villa Grande's open spaces: the Town Square Park, the 4th Street parking area, and the Firehouse Plaza. We'll also get ready for summer in the Preserve by spreading chips on the Patterson Point trails.
